The Reason Behind Scotty Nguyen’s “Baby”

Hello fellow poker addicts! I’m back with some more interesting stuff to show you! It’s the third episode of the WSOP 2010 showdown. We start with this episode as Adam Schoenfeld raises his A7 of clubs in position against big blind Scotty Nguyen with A6 of diamonds. Apparently Scotty came a long way with his English skills as when he first started playing poker; he called everyone baby as he couldn’t pronounce the other player’s names. The flop misses both and Adam once again takes a pot with a stronger position. Playing really good, he leads the chip count on his own table.

Ted Bort Castrated

Ted Bort gets penalized for his idiotic premeditated show. And as the commentator says; good riddance! Honest emotions are very fine, but this isn’t cool.

Cold Deck For Prahlad Friedman

Meanwhile Prahlad Friedman goes all-in on a heart infested board with top two and gets busted by a running running flush from Luis Nargentino, painful but very cold deck! He won’t win his second bracelet this year!

QQ vs KK for Sully Erna, Painful

2500 players went to 2000 as another day full of passion passes. Erik Seidel went all in against Derek Young and needs a trey or a Jack to stay in the tournament. A 6 of spades doesn’t help him and he has to pack his bags. Sully Erna wets his pants as he turns over his QQ against Petter Northug’s KK. No help for him on the flop, turn or river. Better luck in 2010 Sully, maybe that was what they meant.

Steven Buckner vs. Charles Alexander Sylvestre, Again

Steven Buckner and Charles Alexander Sylvestre are at it again at their table, where Sylvestre floats Buckner and makes his move on the river. Buckner doesn’t believe a word of it and quickly calls, shows the pair of sixes and is rewarded with a nice pot. After that he suddenly calls everyone ‘cuz’ with an uncertain but happy feel to it. His street tough persona isn’t fake, as he admits he was a homeless drug addict for most of his younger years. In 1985 he stopped with drugs and he started with real life. He learned to be happy and successful, and is pretty good at it!

Scotty, We Love You!

We have another Scotty Nguyen hand, where we are not allowed to see Nguyen’s hand. It’s a battle of the blinds, where Steve Toulch hits top pair, bets a small amount, but mystery Nguyen calls. Both check the K on the turn and on the river Nguyen bets out where Toulch calls quite hesitantly. Nguyen has bottom 2, and his happy for his “free ride”.

Flashback to the Final Table of the WSOP 2009 Final Table

We have a flashback to Joe Cada at the WSOP 2009 final table where he was heads up against Darvin Moon. Cada raised that pot to 3,000,000 with Jh9d, and Moon smooth called with his 8s7s. The flop brought Moon an up and down straight draw and Cada middle pair. But Cada didn’t want a check raise from Moon, so he checked the flop as well. With another T on the turn, Moon checks again, but Cada does bet after which Moon check raises like he often does. Cada calls quite quickly, since he had a hunch Moon just wanted to put more pressure on Cada by moving all-in rather than just raising which is a sign of weakness. The river is a blank and Cada takes down a huge pot.

Cada now against Iurii Korsunskyi’s 35,000 bet and is forced to fold on a paired board. Not every hand is that exciting!

In the first edition of the WSOP 2010 we saw Jason Mercier raising his snowmen to 2800 and Bill Melvin calling with an AJ of spades. Melvin bets the flop for 4000 and makes his flush on the river while Jason hits his straight. 10000 is the price Mercier has to pay on the turn, he makes a bad but understandable call and has to pay another 20000 on the last card. He plays it quite perfectly just calling here, fearing the flush.

Jason Mercier, Up Close

Apparently he made his fortune on the internet, routinely playing 8 tables at once. His live poker breakthrough was in April 2008, at the casino in San Remo, Italy. He won the whole thing, a win worth $3,000,000. Though while celebrating, he ended up in a fight, and got stabbed by a broken bottle, spending 2 days in the hospital. Talk about a bad beat! He looks quite depressed at this table, looking a little like a cry-baby. But that’s life.

Remember that Scotty Nguyen said “If you call me, it’s going to be all over baby” at the Kevin McBride at the final hand of the main event in ’98? Now he promises that he will say “if I call you, it’s going to be all over baby” if the opportunity arises. Damien Romy, 27 year old French poker professional raises with 43 of diamonds against AQ of diamonds of Adam Schoenfeld and AQ of hearts of Nicky Evans. The flop comes 7dTh6h, giving Evans a flush draw. No one bets anything on the flop, but the turn is another story where Evans gives a Semi-Bluff a try and gets called twice. Sadly for him, he shows weakness on the river by checking and gives Adam in position an easy time betting and stealing this pot.

Mike Matusow Losing Big On An Idiot Side Bet

Mike Matusow made a bet with Ted Forest that he couldn’t lose 45 pounds in 2 and a half months. The scale made him $2,000,000 richer, leaving Mike a little poorer. Mike, who doesn’t have a clue about poker, also seems to be pristinely ungifted when it comes to making a side bet.

Steve Buckner vs. Alexander Sylverstre

Steve Buckner makes a daring bluff with KJo against AKo on a 543o board. $35000 and a little speech convince Charles Alexander Sylverstre to lay down his AKo overcards. Gandolfo, at the table of Nguyen, gets AQs, where he re-raises Nguyen’s AKo who quickly folds but threatens to come look him up if he sees he bluffed on television.

The Death Of Chris Moneymaker

Poker Legend Chris Moneymaker gets knocked out by Torres, on a 444 board, with ten high against king high. The doggie at Mercier’s table, Ted Bort, called Bill Melvin’s 99 raise with J9o, hitting a Jack on the flop and totally dominating Melvin who only has 4% chance to win this hand legitimately. Melvin finally lays it down on the turn and Ted “the dog” Bort starts barking, annoying everyone in the room. Talk about testosterone gone wrong.

Scotty Nguyen vs. David Sklansky And Adam Schoenfeld

Day 3 baby (Scotty Nguyen) of the WSOP, I really love this event, well, it *is* the main poker event. I’d be a douche if I did not like it. Right? Scotty Nguyen, the prince of poker, who won the main event in 1998, is still playing along for the new crown.

On his table he is rivaled by some other big names such as David Sklansky and Adam Schoenfeld. Talking his crap once again, he gets his reads from dominating the table with his blabber. Chuck Danielsson makes a raise with a J7, while Scotty has a nice A9, both off suit. Being in position Danielsson makes a bet on the flop, but Scotty check raises, he makes it look easy, but it isn’t, believe me.

Phil Laak vs. Dilan Thomassie

Phil Laak is all in and dominated, with 34% to win against the QQ of Dilan Thomassie. Having AQ suited, he is not in the best position. While he almost left with his little backpack already on, he hit the nut flush on the turn to stay a little while longer.

Bellande vs. Guy Thomas

Bellande playing against Thomas runs into the quad aces of Guy Thomas, on a 44AA7 board, he check raised the turn, and called a miniature bet on the river, claiming he had quad fours but believed his opponent had quad aces. What total bullshit, but hey, not everyone is as funny a Daniel Negreanu. Who quickly folds his Q on an ace high board, against a new young player called Carr, instructing him to go easy with his cards. The super good reader Daniel makes a bad read as he was “sure he had him beat” but ran into a 6 high bluff.

David Sklansky vs. Rony, Trips offer Carnage

David Sklansky is beat and thrown out by Rony, who flopped trips, and him needing running hearts doesn’t seem to make him very happy. The miracle doesn’t happen and one of the greatest minds of early holdem strategy once again fails to win the WSOP main event.

Chris Moneymaker, A Few Chips Lighter

Now a look at Chris Moneymaker, who needs an Ace on the board, having AK against KK. Fails to hit an ace and is a few chips lighter. Still hoping to win another WSOP after his big win in 2003. Johnny Chan, who has a really big stack at the moment against Bernstein shows 7′s full and takes the chip lead. Amazing!

The Boring AA vs. AA | Patrik Antonius vs. Howard Lederer

Usually, AA vs. AA is really boring, and for the most part, the same is true for this hand. But with such big players on the table, you can still enjoy some of the chit chatter and deep thinking involved.

Look at how Patrik Antonius yawns just before the 0.20 mark, after the commentator tells us it has been a “pretty uneventful game”. Antonius, sitting on the cutoff, decides to limp in with his Rockets, a good move if you ask me, but lots of bad players would just instantly raise here. Howard Lederer puts in a small raise, wanting to make some money on his own bullets.

Raise, Re-Raise, All In | Durrr Runs Away

Tom Dwan “Durrr” calls Lederer’s raise but folds when the action is getting heavy from both Lederer and Antonius, not taking any chances. Lederer re-raises Antonius his raise, to $21.000+ making it a $44.900 pot, after which Antonius calls, wanting to make some more money on the flop and beyond. Probably hoping Lederer has something like AK and hits his deadly king. On the flop Antonius checks, Lederer bets $18.000 and here Antonius once again re-raises Lederer’s bet to $40.000, Lederer calls but you can feel the fear gripping him by the throat, kings, like the commentator says, are a very real possibility.

On the turn Patrik doesn’t hesitate like on the flop and instantly bets $75.000, putting Lederer All-in, should he call. If you ask me, I was amazed by Lederer’s call here, since he is usually very nitty. But he does call and you can feel the relief on his face, another pair of Aces was really the only thing he could be up against here, or a total Antonius bluff, of course!

Phil Ivey Calls For More Live Poker

The really interesting part is where Phil Ivey talks about the fact that they should really start playing live more often, we are not the only ones enslaved by internet poker!

Let’s grab our old chips, get our cash out and do as Phil suggests, maybe online poker is better for cash flow, but nothing can beat the thrill of live poker, can it?
